This week I’m so pleased to introduce you to a very special Chick … Hailey Hooson, age 12. I met Hailey and her Mom Melissa and Nona Nancy at an all-ages tap class two years ago. We had so much fun and I know Hailey was the best behaved of the four of us! Hailey is a beautiful girl and dancer and with all of this crazy COVID business, she has started her own bakery, La Boulangerie au Détour … The Bakery Around the Bend. When I saw Hailey’s menu, I just had to order her brownies for a colleague and friend. When the tray of brownies was more than half-eaten before noon, I knew Hailey had to join the Kitchen Chickens and start a new set of posts for our younger Chicks.

Here’s Hailey’s story … enjoy!

My Mom and I have been trying to perfect our brownies for years. Who knew that one regular day I would stumble on to a chocolate crinkle cookie recipe site and somehow manage to turn that into my brownie recipe! I love baking and eating my delicous results! It all started when my Mom would make chocolate cookies. I have had at least a million of them. My love of baking has started a bit of a business idea! Seeing as I am still in grade school I thought it would be pretty difficult, but that’s what makes it more exciting! The quote that I live by sums this all up … “done be afraid to take whisks!”

Hailey’s Brownies (compliments of @pinterest)
4 large eggs
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 cup cocoa, unsweetened
¼ cup confectioners’ sugar
2 cups granulated sugar
½ teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons vanilla extract, pure
½ cup vegetable oil

In a small bowl, combine the eggs, oil, vanilla and granulated sugar. Mix well.
In a large bowl, combine the flour, cocoa, baking powder and salt. Stir in the wet ingredients just until moistened.
Pour batter into greased 9”x9” pan. Bake at 350F for 20-25 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool for 5 minutes before removing from pan to a wire rack.

I didn’t get to taste the brownies but like I said … more than half the pan was gone before noon! I heard a lot of yummy sounds and other colleagues begging for a piece! Reviews included “perfectly gooey” and “oh so chocolately”. Thanks, Hailey! Looking forward to more recipes from our Chicks.
